Background Information

OneNote is an organizational tool for business professionals, and students alike. The program can be use similar to a three-ring binder, or Trapper Keeper. The program holds Notebooks, which in turn contains sections and pages.

Helpful Tips and Features in OneNote

Add a note anywhere on the page. Just click and type – it’s just like sitting in front of a notepad with a pen. If you choose to use OneNote on a tablet, use your stylus as a pen to write notes.

Page Templates:

  • To create a new page, click on New Page. A new, blank page will appear in your notebook.
    • There are more page types available in OneNote than blank pages. Click the New Page drop-down, and select a listed page option.
    • Choose Page Templates to select more templates from Microsoft.com (must have internet connection for this). Options include templates for class notes, detailed meeting notes and agendas, and planners.
  • Create a template from the current selected page. This is helpful when consistently using a custom page.
    • Access this by clicking on New Page > Page Templates > Save Current Page as a Template (bottom of the template panel).
  • Set your notebook page to view with notebook rule lines.
    • View Tab > Page Setup section > Rule Line drop-down. Page color options are available in this section, as well.

Home Tab - Noteworthy Tools

  • Email Page: The selected notebook page will open as the body of a new email in Outlook. Outlook is required for this function.
  • Outlook Tasks: The selected notebook page will save as details of a new Outlook task. All Outlook Task functions are available for this notebook page – reminders, mark as complete, set as recurring task, etc.
  • Find Tags: Tag pages now to easily search through Notebooks later.

Insert Tab Tools

Some of the Insert Tab tools work the same way as they do in other programs – such as inserting a picture or attachment. Here is a list of new or modified tools in OneNote.

  • Screen Clipping: clip a webpage, and link back to the website.
  • File Printout: easily open a linked file, and preview the file in OneNote.
  • Record Audio: Record audio when using OneNote on a device with a microphone, such as a laptop, tablet, or phone.
  • Record Video: Record video when using OneNote on a device with a microsphone, such as a laptop, tablet, or phone.
