Background Information
Users with appropriate permissions have the ability to add images to a SharePoint Site Page. This Job Aide outlines how to add and configure images using the Image Web Part and Image Gallery Web Part in SharePoint Online.
Add an Image to a Site Page
The Image Web Part allows for the display of one image and a caption directly below. The image will display as the width of the column in which it is placed. Resize handles and image width/height specifications are not available in SharePoint Online.
Add an Image Web Part
- Click Edit in the upper-right corner of the page to enable editing.
- Navigate to the section of the page that will hold the image.
- Hover over the upper portion of the empty section space and click on the Add Web Part tool (blue and white plus icon).
- In the Web Part selection panel, select Image.
Select an Image
There are four options to select an image in SharePoint Online. Options include:
- Recent – Displays a grid of recently used images. Select an image by clicking the checkbox in the top-right corner, then click Open.
- Site – Allows you to browse through your site’s document libraries. Select the image by clicking the checkbox next to it, then click Open.
- Upload – Upload a new image from your local computer or network drive by clicking Upload, then browsing for the image file.
- From a Link – Paste a URL for an image stored in SharePoint. Navigate to the image, right-click it, and select Copy Link to get the URL.
Add an Image Caption
The Image Web Part has a caption placeholder below the image. Click in the caption field below the Image to add text. Text formatting cannot be modified.
Add an Image Gallery to a Site Page
The Image Gallery displays multiple images as either a group of Tiles or a Revolving Carousel.
Add an Image Gallery Web Part
- Click Edit in the upper-right corner of the page to enable editing.
- Navigate to the section of the page that will hold the image.
- Hover over the upper portion of the empty section space and click on the Add Web Part tool.
- In the Web Part selection panel, scroll through the options to find and select Image Gallery.
- See the Select an Image window for options. For a Gallery, select two or more Images.
- To select images from a specific location, such as a Document Library, click on the appropriate option (Site, Recent, etc.).
- Select the images by clicking the checkbox next to them and click Open.
- If you want to add images from another location, click + Add to select more images.
Edit the Image Gallery Display
An Image Gallery can be displayed as a group of Thumbnail Tiles or a Revolving Carousel. Tiles is the default view. The Carousel Layout has a text field that lists the number of images below the image placeholder. Arrows appear on the left and right edges of the Web Part so a viewer can flip between images.
To adjust the Gallery to a Carousel:
- Click the Web Part edit pencil in the upper-left corner of the Web Part.
- The Image Gallery Settings Panel will appear to the far-right of the screen. Select Carousel.
- Click the X in the upper-right corner to close the Settings Panel.
- Save and Close to preview the changes.
Edit the Ratio of Gallery Tiles
Gallery Tiles can be displayed in the following ratios. Adjust the Tiles Ratio in the Image Gallery Settings Panel. Be sure to select Save and Close to preview the changes after they are made.
- 1:1 Square
- 16:9 Wide
- 4:3 Standard
Rearrange Gallery Images
You can rearrange the order of images in the Image Gallery Web Part both in Tiles and Carousel layouts.
To Rearrange Images in Tiles Layout:
- Click Edit in the upper-right corner of the screen to enable editing.
- Hover over the image you want to move and click the Move Tool (a 4-way arrow).
- Drag the image to the desired position within the gallery and release the cursor to place the image.
To Rearrange Images in Carousel Layout:
- Edit the Image Gallery Web Part.
- In the Image Gallery Settings Panel (far-right of the screen), switch the Layout to Tiles.
- Use the Move Tool to rearrange the Images within the Tiles Gallery.
- Once images are in the desired order, switch the Layout back to Carousel.
- Save and Close to preview the changes.
